LEVEL 3 AWARD IN HEALTH & SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

The requirement for good health and safety practices in the workplace is enshrined in law but as importantly is a responsibility shared by all. Business owners and managers must ensure that policies and procedures are in place to protect not only workers but also visitors to the premises.

It is essential to promote a health and safety culture in any workplace and a significant element in this strategy is the need to have a well trained and knowledgeable workforce at all levels. There are existing opportunities to train managers and operators but until now there has been little opportunity to train those at middle management levels.

The course covers the following subjects;

  • The importance of health & safety in the workplace

  • Legislation

  • Accidents in the workplace

  • Ill health in the workplace

  • Health & safety organisation and management

  • The role of supervisors

LEVEL 4 AWARD IN HEALTH & SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

The legal requirement to train employees should extend beyond awareness and understanding of health and safety issues. In addition there is a clear need for key personnel to have the skills and knowledge to manage the health and safety function. The Level 4 Award in Health & Safety is designed for those working in any business regardless of their product or service range. It is essential for all those who have an employment role that includes a responsibility for the management of health and safety issues. It is also an appropriate technical qualification for those wishing to apply to offer Level 1 & 2 H&S training.

Successful candidates will be able to manage health and safety in most businesses, by developing auditing and monitoring programmes, designing safe practices and procedures, liaising with enforcement officers, interpreting legal requirements, staff training, and establishing risk assessment projects (with additional training where necessary)

The course covers the following subjects; Maintaining a safe workplace environment; facilities; electricity; fire safety; work equipment; first aid. Occupational health & hygiene; hazardous substances; PPE; noise; stress; control measures; Safe systems; implementation; manual handling; DSE; RSI; sub-contractors.Techniques of safety management; health & safety policies; risk assessment; accident prevention; quality management; documentation.Education and training, information; effective training, supervision and evaluation. Legislation; Acts; The Law; Regulations: enforcement officers; safety committee.

Duration: 5 day programme plus exam morning

Assessment: Written questions to answer in a two and a half hour examination

PRINCIPLES OF RISK ASSESSMENT

This course is designed to help improve the workplace culture for occupational health and safety.Its main purpose is to enable learners to understand the basic principles of risk assessment. This qualification will therefore give all employees the ability to contribute to the process and act always to protect their own health and safety and that of others.

Outline Programme

  • Main causes of accidents and ill health, and their implications for people in the workplace

  • Legal requirements for risk assessment

Principles of risk assessment including:

- hazards, risks and control measures

- the five steps of risk assessment

- the hierarchy of control

- risk assessment review and record keeping

LEVEL 2 AWARD IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION & PERSONAL SAFETY

This course is useful for employers and those employees who deal directly with members of the public; from receptionists to those who work in other peoples homes.

  • Resolving confrontational situations

  • Personal safety

  • Outcomes;The candidate will be able to understand

  • The terminology in conflict resolution

  • The laws that apply to businesses and their employers

  • The concepts of a safe working environment and how the risk of conflict can be assessed.

Level 2 Award in the Principles of COSHH

This course complements the Level 2 Award in Health & Safety programme and it is strongly recommended that students should already hold the certificate prior to the course. The course is aimed at those who use substance hazardous to health at work and introduces students to the hazards associated with those substances, the risks and controls available and what to expect from a COSHH assessment.

Successful completion will prepare students to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in co-operation with their managers and supervisors.

The course covers the following subjects;

Definition and types of substances hazardous to health in the workplace.

Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes

COSHH assessments and control options.

Responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations.

LEVEL 2 AWARD IN THE PRINCIPLES OF MANUAL HANDLING

This course complements the Level 2 Award in Health & Safety programme and it is strongly recommended that students should already hold the this certificate prior to the course.

The course is aimed at those who carry out manual handling activities at work and introduces students to the hazards of manual handling, the risks involved and controls available and what to expect from a manual handling assessment.

Successful completion will prepare students to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the development of safer methods and tasks, in co-operation with their managers and supervisors. 

The qualification is not intended to train students to carry out manual handling assessments nor to provide detailed training on handling techniques.

The course covers the following subjects;

  • The process of manual handling in the workplace

  • Manual handling injuries and the activities which cause them

  • Manual handling assessment and control options

  • Responsibilities imposed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations

Duration: half day programme.

FIRE SAFETY

The course will provide participants with a greater awareness and understanding of the threat posed by fire and raise awareness in identifying hazards in the work place and at home, including a basic knowledge of fire fighting equipment.

Course content;

  • Introduction to fires safety and emergency actions

  • Identify fire hazards in the workplace and home

  • Describe the fire safety responsibilities as laid out in legislation including; Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (April 2006)

  • Describe how fires can start spread and be controlled.

  • Fire risk assessment and controls

  • Distinguish between the different types of fire extinguisher

  • Understand the importance of having emergency procedures

STRESS AWARENESS

Stress Awareness is aimed at raising awareness of likely sources of work-related stress, the range of symptoms and effects it can cause and the options available for its control. While the level of the qualification is aimed at general workers, it would provide a suitable introduction to the issue of work-related stress for more senior staff.

Successful completion will prepare students to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the development of strategies to combat work-related stress, in co-operation with their managers and supervisors. This unit of study can be delivered as a stand-alone qualification and there are no specific pre-requisites.

The course covers the following subjects

  • Definitions of stress.

  • Stress as an occupational health hazard.

  • Identification of basic workplace stressors.

  • Development of basic controls for work-related stressors.

  • Responsibilities imposed under UK legislation.

Course objectives;  

By the end of the programme the student will be able to:

  • explain what is meant by the term stress and in particular work-related stress.

  • explain the importance of controlling stress in the workplace.

  • explain the typical stress related factors in the workplace.

  • identify stress in colleagues and themselves.

  • advise on and implement controls in the workplace to reduce stress.

  • monitor colleagues and themselves in relation to stress at work

Asbestos awareness

The course covers the following subjects:

  • Properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for workers who smoke

  • Types, uses and likely occurrences of asbestos and ACMs

  • General emergency procedures, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust in the workplace

  • Risk assessment and how to avoid risk from asbestos. For example, for building works, no employer should carry out a work that disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed ACMs are not present
